Coolant, coolant and more coolant...

Today the BMW specialty shop at www.foreignmotorcars.com went through 9 gallons of coolant across 5 different BMW's. We started the day off with an older E46 that was brought over to us from another mechanic shop diagnosed with needing a heater core. Knowing that BMW's don't typically every need heater cores (thank goodness since it would be a major, major job to replace) we used our in-house knowledge and traced it back to a transmission thermostat that was jammed closed. Two hours later we were onto the first of 3 water pump jobs that would take through most of the day today. Coolant has to be the absolute worse fluid a BMW possesses simply because of it's tendency to splatter everywhere and slippery feel that no matter how much you wipe up it's still a skating rink until the next day.

Sold 2011 328 X-Drive Coupe

Kyle just sold our absolutely gorgeous Vermillion Red Metallic 328 X-drive coupe. We love this color here at FMCI. So unique and so stunning it's one of those colors that looks so rich and deep you want to dive into it. Of course Alex at Driven Perfection on Route 18 in Weymouth takes a color like this to a whole new level. It's one of the few cars that we can sit and look at all day without every caring if it sells or not. Glad it's gone to a great guy who loves it as much as we did. Enjoy it!

Sold 2008 528 6-Speed

Just sold our 2008 BMW 528XI manual transmission car today to a long time BMW driver. This gentleman had been looking specifically for a manual transmission 5-series to replace his E39 540 manual with over 200k miles on it. Glad we were able to see this one go to an enthusiast who will truly appreciate it.

E30 Rebuild Continued...

Got the E30 cylinder head back from the machine shop today. We had both it and the intake manifold dipped clean and blasted shiny. Looked great and now we're ready to install the new camshaft, rockers, springs, valves (with new seals) and guides. All the parts showed up today so tomorrow will be spent putting it all together by David.

535 "buzz" noise coming from engine

Today we had a very unusual "buzz" noise coming from the engine of a 2014 535 X-Drive every time the accelerator pedal was pressed. This noise was coming from the valvetronic motor which is located under the valve cover gasket. This motor is what's used to set the valve lift on the engine which in turn acts similar to a throttle body allowing the engine to accelerate . On the older (Pre N55) BMW engines this motor is mounted to the side of the valve cover and worked in series with a sensor called the eccentric shaft sensor. Both of these have been combined to one unit on the N55 BMW engines making it easier to diagnose but more difficult to replace. We had to remove the high pressure injector fuel lines, remove the ignition coil wiring harness, remove the ECU box cover and remove the valve cover just to gain access to this part. Once we where there, we actually had to partially disconnect the eccentric cam shaft to release it from the valvetronic motor. Lots of work but without this item being replaced, eventually the car most likely would not accelerate the way it's supposed to. Glad it's all fixed and back on the road.

E30 Motor Rebuild

We started an interesting project on an E30 M20 motor rebuild this week. The car is a 1987 BMW 325i convertible that originally came from North Carolina a few years back when our customer purchased it from it's original owner. The car ran great until one day last week while driving down the highway the engine started to skip and sputter. When it was towed in to us we discovered one of the rocker arms inside the motor had snapped off. Unfortunately the only way to replace this rocker is to remove the cylinder head to remove the intake valves to gain access to disconnect the rocker rod to replace the rocker itself. An awful lot of work. The only other alternative would be to replace the engine itself with a used one; not something we ever recommend doing since you really have no idea what your getting in a used motor. Knowing a rebuild was in store, we spent a significant amount of time with our customer to review several performance upgrades to really make this E30 a star to drive. As of now, we're swapping out the camshaft with a performance spec series, changing all the rockers to heavy duty ones with larger adjusters and stronger hardware. We're also considering stainless steel valves but not sure as of now. Another thing we're going to be doing is swapping the automatic transmission out for a manual which means installing a third pedal and a stick shift in place of the old 4 speed automatic transmission. We'll keep you updated as the project progresses.
